UX/UI Design

UX/UI team are the artists who bring the vision to life by monitoring all the other disciplines and controlling every tiny aspect of work. It’s like a puzzle in which every piece has to fit perfectly into the next one. And they’re the ones who have to put it all together.

Dzmitry Miazhenka
UX Designer

His passion for design started at university, and over the last 19 years, he has utilised his self-taught design skills to create stunning visuals that captivate audiences worldwide.

Besides, if you need someone to talk to about competitive games and street photography, call Dzmitry. He knows it all!

Let’s get to know him.

Could you tell us the story about your career path and education?

I studied to be a programmer and information systems manager, but from the beginning, I worked as a designer. I am self-taught in this profession, and my journey as a designer began almost 20 years ago when UX wasn’t even a concept yet, and specialists in this field were known as Human Factor Engineers. Since then, I have gone through all the stages and graphic styles of interfaces, which helped me easily transition from modern web design to game interfaces without any difficulty.

Designing has always been my passion, and I am constantly striving for ways to make things better. It is an incredibly rewarding feeling to see the results of my hard work and know that I am making a real difference in people’s lives.

I was very lucky in Wargaming, and I got my experience in the most exciting and complex features: Premium Account 2.0, Battle Pass, Combat UI Return of the Waffenträger, and Holiday Ops. And in 2022, I lectured for students at Wargaming Forge.

Please name a few reasons why you chose to join the gaming industry. What is so attractive in the game industry?

Well, I’ve always been an avid gamer. I have more than 45 000 battles in the game – World of Tanks – and that was probably my biggest inspiration for joining WarGaming. Besides, I wanted to do something meaningful for a large audience. It’s impressive to see how players react to what I had done with my own hands, and reading reviews from players who experienced it firsthand has been incredibly gratifying! I also wanted to be part of a large design team to absorb the team’s extensive experience in game development. And I really did not lose. I got the most qualitative leap in my knowledge of games, design, and many related disciplines.

Being able to work on something I am passionate about is an incredible feeling. Every day I come to work knowing I can make a difference for players, face new challenges and complete complex tasks. It’s awesome!

Share your perspective on what is so unique about Wargaming (outstands other companies)?

Well, several things make it unique.

First and foremost, this is a unique opportunity to do your favourite work at a high level. Every day you work with many different disciplines. You come up with a visual concept along with art and, together with the developers, find the best way to implement the functionality, manoeuvring between the game’s technologies.

Secondly, the level of motivation from everyone at the company is incredible, and mutual support makes work a pleasure.

Then, the satisfaction of seeing your work live in-game and receiving player feedback is rewarding – you get to see your ideas come to life!

Lastly, I think what sets Wargaming apart is how it values its employees – feedback and opinions are always taken into account when making decisions, so it feels like you’re part of something bigger than just another “job”.

Tell us what is so special about your discipline or area of responsibility.

The designer starts the project at the very beginning and brings it all the way to the end. We have to control every tiny aspect and monitor all disciplines to get precisely what is planned in the right quality.

Each task is challenging because there is no place to peep at the solution. You can’t look at competitors because they simply do not exist. Every time it’s a real adventure.

More is needed to come up with a good solution. It needs to be implemented in a huge number of different technologies and agreed on every aspect with a huge number of people. Communication is becoming almost the core of what we do. This significantly develops soft skills and turns introverts into extroverts.

You begin to not only understand your field but also become well-oriented in many other disciplines, allowing you to create magic.

Would you share your thoughts about the privileges of being in Lithuania? What do you like the most about Lithuania?

I just recently moved to Vilnius, and I feel like this city is so cosy and lively! It’s not a big city, but it has this unique atmosphere that makes it feel homey and inviting. And since it’s a walkable city with a nice public transportation system, I don’t need a car for comfortable living. Plus, I can take short trips to other countries because of how close the airport is – it only takes 15 minutes from where I live!

Also, Vilnius Old Town is absolutely stunning with its colourful buildings and cobblestone streets – it feels like being inside a fairytale sometimes!

What are your hobbies?

As for me, competitive games are a great way to release stress and have fun. However, if we are talking about “real-life” activities, travelling and street photography are something that I really enjoy.

When it comes to travelling, I feel very lucky that I can explore new places and cultures. I love getting out of my comfort zone and having the opportunity to try new food, learn about different traditions, and maybe even make meaningful connections with people along the way.

Street photography has also become a great source of inspiration for my UX design work. I like to notice and photograph examples of interfaces in an urban environment, beautiful signs and public transport timetables, etc. I collect unusual examples of urban interfaces. I like to understand why they are the way they are.

What advice would you give to a new joiner?

As a new joiner, it’s important to remember that everyone has something to offer. Every team member is here because of their skills and abilities, so don’t feel intimidated by those around you! This is exactly the place where you can not only design but also come up with new approaches, optimise development processes and develop the entire design team and your colleagues. Therefore, it is essential to always go beyond your task to do more than is required of you. It doesn’t go unnoticed, and it always pays off. So go for it, and you’ll reach the stars!
